Your “evidence of healing” reminded me of a visit home i made when i was still living in ATL. It was during that hazy pandemic period where we can’t pinpoint actual calendar dates but it was after George Floyd was murdered and for some reason my mother and i had pulled over in the parking lot by the ball fields at Herrin
Park just as a protest march was starting at the park entrance. I remember being nearly brought to tears seeing people marching down Herrin Road shouting “no Justin no peace” “black lives matter” in a town that historically harbored and celebrated the Klan. From sun down town to people of all shades marching down a main road for equality.
Heather, thank you so much for bringing up that march as a beautiful symbol of progress & evidence of healing in our little hometown. I was there in my wheelchair! Along with my husband & sister Tammy. Also, that was such a spot-on description of that time period, ha ha. Thank you so much, as always, for reading.
